ASF enhances the power of small foundation giving by providing donors, trustees, and staff of member foundations with peer learning opportunities, targeted tools and resources, and a collective voice in and beyond the philanthropic community. Small foundations represent half of all foundation giving in the United States.

What is the position? ASF’s Development Manager assists in executing ASF’s overall plan to attract additional resources for ASF from members, corporations and others. This position reports directly to the Director of Development and works with other ASF staff, ASF Board members and volunteers, and ASF’s CEO on development-related activities and programs.

Development duties include helping to develop strategies for implementing ASF’s development plan, managing the member annual giving program, writing grant requests and grant reports as required to member foundations, corporate sponsors and large foundations, researching foundation prospects among members and large foundations, writing profiles of member donors for ASF newsletters, and responding to donor e-mails and other correspondence.

Responsibilities include:

• Lead the development and implementation of the annual giving plan focused on ASF members through direct mail, proposals, personal solicitation, special events and other appropriate methods.

• Plan and coordinate annual appeal mailings including drafting of the original text, determining mailing segments, and overseeing the appeal process.

• Oversee research, prospect ID, proposals, and stewardship for large foundations, working with the Director of Development and the CEO on strategies and processes; also support the CEO by drafting and editing proposals to large foundations.

• Contribute to ASF’s stewardship of member donors and large foundation donors by monitoring requirements for grant reports, securing needed information from appropriate ASF staff, and writing the reports.

• Work with Director of Development and CEO on major gift prospect tracking, cultivation and solicitation activities.

• In consultation with Director of Development, determines donor focused articles, features, and other material to be included in newsletters; writes or oversees the writing of such material; looks for donor recognition opportunities in ASF publications, website, and events; coordinates with ASF program, editing and production staff on these items.

• Assists the Director of Development and the Development Coordinator in providing any necessary staff support to the ASF Board and Development Committee.

• Serves as liaison between the Development Department and program staff.

• Attends conferences, meetings, etc., in order to stay informed about trends in the foundation and philanthropy support arena, and to cultivate contacts among other organizations.

• As needed, support other ASF departments in projects requiring writing, member interviews, event strategizing, etc.

• Other projects as assigned

Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree, minimum of five years increasing development experience with demonstrated success
- Proven proposal and grant writing experience
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Knowledge of associations and nonprofit organizations
- Proficiency with a range of development hardware and software and database management skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Detail-oriented, with strong attention to follow-through
- Can work independently
- Will take initiative
- Ability to work collaboratively with others
- Able to manage multiple projects and activities in a dynamic environment
- Must be responsible, dependable, and display the highest level of integrity
