The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is an organization comprised of international development professionals – researchers, policy specialists and program managers committed to the creation and sharing of the needed tools, approaches and techniques that will serve as catalysts for change for women worldwide. Due to strategic growth, ICRW currently seeks a Gender and Agriculture Specialist.

The Gender and Agriculture Specialist will work as part of a team and independently with ICRW’s Economic Development Team to implement activities related to gender in the emerging reemphasis on agriculture in development. S/he will undertake policy and program research; program-related activities pertaining to the design, implementation and evaluation of agricultural development projects and design and implementation of gender and agriculture training. S/he will contribute to further conceptual development and fundraising on the key thematic area of gender and agriculture, and its integration with the team’s broader portfolio of work on gender and assets, microfinance and enterprise development and across ICRW’s portfolios in areas such as HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence and girls.

The Gender and Agriculture Specialist will have a number of responsibilities, including undertaking research and analysis that involves collecting and analyzing primary and secondary data; drafting sharp and comprehensive syntheses based on data analysis; and writing high quality reports and papers. Analytic work may include issues papers, design and conduct monitoring and evaluation studies, and quick turn-around briefs and background documents. Providing technical assistance including practical gender guidance and input on agriculture proposals on design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; conduct gender audits of agriculture projects. Designing and conduct training related to gender and agriculture topics and design and conduct workshops. Serves as Project Director, as needed, on projects in gender and agriculture research and analysis, technical assistance, and training. Represents ICRW externally in is work on gender and agriculture, including with donors, partners, and in conferences, events, and networks. Works with Portfolio Director, Economic Development, and Vice President, Research and Programs, to strengthen and expand ICRW’s gender and agriculture program including, expanding networks and cultivating potential donors; raising ICRW’s visibility through publications, working papers and reports, and developing proposals and raising funds.

Our ideal candidate will have Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Agricultural Sciences, Rural Sociology, or related discipline. M.A. with additional experience acceptable. Four (4) years to six (6) years of experience, working on gender as it relates to agriculture, food security, nutrition and broader development issues. Significant experience with research and analysis, monitoring and evaluation and programmatic activities is essential; experience with corporate sector preferred. Extensive knowledge in gender and agriculture, including demonstrated expertise in conducting gender analysis, gender assessments, and/or gender-focused research of agricultural issues, including farming system dynamics, access to productive resources and services, marketing, crop productivity, innovation, or impact of new technologies. Sound understanding of program development, management, and evaluation principles. Ability to work across programs and to apply research and analytical skills and knowledge in other economic area and across disciplines in health and social areas such as HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence and men and masculinity. Experience with monitoring and evaluation and demonstrated experience in designing and/or conducting training. Outstanding written and oral communication skills and demonstrated track record of producing high quality, well-written deliverables in a timely fashion. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage projects, including staffing, work plans, deliverables, timelines, and budgets. Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills. Strong skills in English and sound working knowledge of an additional language such as Spanish, French or Swahili.
